A decision to divide the medieval market square into two smaller squares changed the character of the area, incorporating it spatially and visually into the city. Its former commercial image was replaced in the nineteenth century by a new, metropolitan and representative one. The article attempts to look critically at the entire architectural and urban complex of Matejko Square. Special emphasis was put on the outline of the square’s spatial evolution, from the time of its municipal charter to the nineteenth-century regulations. The author also reflects on possible models that could have influenced the final shape of the square.}, type={Text}, title={Od średniowiecznego placu targowego do dziewiętnastowiecznego placu reprezentacyjnego : refleksje wokół przemian architektoniczno-przestrzennych placu Matejki w Krakowie}, URL={http://www.rcin.org.pl/Content/140649/PDF/WA303_175661_II14682_Bursiewicz.pdf}, keywords={cities and towns - Poland - history - 19th c., cities and towns - Poland - history - 1900-1945, architecture and society - Poland - history - 19th c., architecture and society - Poland - history - 1900-1945, city planning - Poland - Kraków - history, architecture - Poland - Kraków - history, Kleparz (Kraków, Poland) - history, Kleparz district, Matejko Square}, }
