His murid and naib Baysangur Benoevsky was one of the bravest fighters. Both Shamil and Baysangur have a place in the Chechen pantheon of national heroes; they are symbols of gazavat – the sacred liberating war in the Caucasus. In contemporary Chechen patriotic songs the most important stage of Shamil’s uprising is the siege of Gunib – the last stand against Russia. It was an inspiration for two famous Chechen bards: Imam Alimsultanov (1957–1996) and Timur Mutsuraev (born 1976). The songs about Gunib give a symbolic pic¬ture of two different attitudes towards honour, bravery, duty and self-sacrifice represented by characters of Shamil and Baysangur.}, title={Oblicza czeczeńskiego gazawatu: imam Szamil i Bajsangur Bienojewski w utworach współczesnych bardów czeczeńskich}, type={Text}, URL={http://www.rcin.org.pl/Content/72246/PDF/WA303_94706_A453-SzDR-53-2_Filipczyk.pdf}, volume={53}, number={2}, journal={Studia z Dziejów Rosji i Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej}, publisher={Instytut Historii im.
