 abstract={The article provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of the totalitarian model for commemorating offi cial holidays and anniversaries in Poland, established during the Stalinist period. The analysis is based on the most signifi cant holidays in the socialist calendar – 1 May and 22 July. Changes in the manner of celebration during the ‘thaw’ and the early years of ‘real socialism’ allow conclusions to be drawn about the evolution of the political system during the crisis and the process of de-totalitarianisation of the system of power. This article contributes to the ongoing discussion of the evolution of communist governance in Poland after 1956 and the signifi cance of this turning point in the shift from totalitarianism to post-totalitarianism/authoritarianism.},
