Search for: [Object description = "Photo \(scan from slide\). Balu Mashe \- a folk artist from the Warli tribe in front of his home in the village of Devgaon. He poses by playing an instrument made of gourds. This gourd musician motif appears in pictures on paper. Painting of pictures started in the 1980s, when paper was delivered and persuaded to paint on it. Formerly members of the tribe painted ritual marks on the walls of their huts during weddings. Jivya Mashe was the first to paint on paper. Paintings on paper, painted in a technique characteristic of Warla \- white paint on a dark background \- have been found in showrooms and are being sold in Mumbai. The existing ritual signs have been replaced by images from the daily life of the tribe, both from material life and figures from the spiritual life. These paintings are in the collections of museums around the world."]
