Naming and renaming of urban space often is sensitive in terms of the street location and status and implies categorization of streets according to the perceived importance of a street name. Thus, different locations in the city have different symbolic significance, and the urban toponymy could be read as a spatial projection of the societal axiological system. This article represents an attempt to study the importance of location (centrality vs. peripherality) and status (significance) of the urban public spaces in the 36 largest Ukrainian cities in terms of symbolical value and memory policy. The findings indicate that both investigated factors constitute an important tool of identity shaping and historical memory policy, but their influence and manifestation may vary considerably depending on specific historical, cultural and (geo)political conditions. Therefore, although the central parts of cities and the main urban arteries have tangibly larger symbolic significance, the toponymy of less presentable urban areas may be no less eloquent in the critical toponymy studies.
Natural and landscape resources may provide an important basis for the development of rural communities. Intense urbanization of suburban areas makes them more exposed to rapid loss of these resources than in the case of units located peripherally. In this context, the identification of the existing values in the suburban communes as well as their protection with the use of planning tools seem to be more important. The aim of this study was to identify the level of awareness of landscape resources in the communes of the Poznań agglomeration and confrontation between methods of space management and provisions in municipal spatial policy documents. As an example three communes were selected: Dopiewo, Tarnowo Podgórne and Stęszew - located in the western part of the Poznan County, in the area of intensive development of suburban settlements. The paper focused on the analysis of natural and landscape resources, with particular emphasis on forest areas and water reservoirs. Research was undertaken to recognize changes in the land use model and its dynamics in the vicinity of these areas, which in communes’ spatial planning documents are often described as the most valuable from the point of view of existing resources. There were clearly defined differences in the spatial policies of individual communes in the context of the conservation of these resources.
Natural decrease and out-migration are the main processes causing depopulation of rural areas in most of the easternEU countries. The causes of depopulation are varied as well as numerous and might differwithin the same country or even a region. Both internal and international migration play an important role inthepopulation decline in Lithuania, but their relative importance differ from region to region. Depopulationleads to a falling population density and therefore to the shrinkage of social networks, especially in the rural areas. It has broad consequences for the life quality, causes pessimistic attitudes and threatens the futuredevelopment of the sparsely populated areas. There is little hope that the existing demographictrends will change in the nearest future. However, the analysed processes are usually perceived purely negatively, thoughitis not true in somerespects.
