Guarded by procedures and verifying institutions%2C the special symbolic and economic value of heritage becomes an element of rivalry and a source of social conflicts. An illustration of such tension is Krak%C3%B3w%E2%80%99s palimpsestic and semantically dense space%2C which is ordered according to a strict symbolic hierarchy. Consideration of the different treatment of Krak%C3%B3w%E2%80%99s Old Town complex%2C which was entered on UNESCO%E2%80%99s World Heritage List in 1978%2C and the socialist realist centre of Nowa Huta%2C which unsuccessfully pretended to the title%2C reveals the hidden rules governing the supposedly democratic heritage policy%22]
