These concern, first of all, the problems raised by the authors publishing in the journal, in expanding the areas of research, in the terminology applied, in cooperation with other disciplines of human sciences, as well as the connections with various approaches in ethnology and cultural anthropology and innovation of research suggested by particular authors. The texts published in the recent decade have been analysed in a detailed way. Their subjects include: ethnic problems, intercultural contact, systemic transformation and changes connected with globalization, the functioning of information society, the anthropology of politics, migrations, urban anthropology, medicine, media, dialogue (between cultures, religious groups and in politics), the anthropology of business and management and the connections between human sciences and economy. Other subjects concerned the cultural phenomenon of memory and forgetting as well as the history of the discipline. According to the author all those subjects will be developed in the near future. The subjects that will be studied more intensely than hitherto will concern security in the broad sense of the word. More attention will be dedicated to growing numbers of various groups of migrants.Ethnologists/anthropologists will also conduct research into privileged groups, organizations and groups with strong social position. Another field of reflection whose development we should expect is, according to the author, autoethnography/autoanthropology. It is connected with ethical problems, deep reflection of the phenomena studied and with the experience of the study L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/Content/61763/PDF/WA308_81474_P326_Jubileusz-szescdzies_I.pdf M3 - Text J2 - 60th anniversary of Etnografia Polska. Their nervous system processes external stimuli much more intensely than in case of so called average sensitivity people. This in turn evokes in them a sense of constant anxiety, causes hyperirritability and distress, induces psychosomatic disorders, fears or depression. Highly Sensitive People are characterised by strong (often uncontrollable) emotionality, empathy, being highly perceptive to suffering or any indication of injustice, as well as being too quick in placing trust. Quite often they experience loneliness, and a feeling of being misunderstood. Based on the analysis of posts from chosen Internet forums, the author portrays the Highly Sensitive Person. She also examines other issues discussed in these media, like the question of classifying this condition as an illness and thus of „curing” it. According to the author, Highly Sensitive People constitute a cultural minority in a world ruled by the culture of hostility, humiliation and rejection. Their behaviours influence interpersonal relations, but these individuals are also perceived as „different”. They often view their sensitivity as a weakness which hinders functioning in a society dominated by people of „average sensitivity”. On the other hand, according to some highly sensitive people, this quality is in fact a gift. Tedd Zeff holds that Highly Sensitive People have an important mission, which is to „serve as balance to the more aggressive behaviour of some of the non-HSPs who advocate a less than nurturing policy towards humans, animal and Mother Nature” (Zeff 2008, p. 30). Zarys problemu UR - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/dlibra/publication/edition/61561 ER - TY - GEN N1 - 24 cm N2 - One of the leading trends in modern ethnology/cultural anthropology consists in studying the cultural border/borderlands phenomenon. This trend is defined as the anthropology of borders or the anthropology of borderlands. In Poland it has been strongly represented since after the year 1989. The political changes and the transformation of the political system which took place at that time contributed to its development. One should nonetheless emphasize that also in socialist times a few papers were published concerning the ethnic/cultural borderlands. The aim of the socialist state was namely to create homogeneous communities of citizens, also from an ethnic perspective, whereas research on borderlands pointed to actual differences, confrontations between ‘othernesses’ and their effects. The author of this paper presents some examples of writings by Polish ethnologists and sociologists which have had a significant impact on studies of the borderland phenomenon, the definition of its indicators and on identifications of its different types. They also present various points of view on the phenomenon. One of them is the perspective of people living in cultural, ethnic and national borderlands. Part of the article has been devoted to the specific category of the borderland’s inhabitant. The author, for instance by referring to the results of her own fieldwork carried out in the Republic of Belarus at the Polish-Belarus border, points to the fact that the behaviour of borderland-people may, to some extent, differ from the model which is usually described by researchers. The article also draws the readers’ attention to a phenomenon consisting in an excessive extension of the understanding of the term ‘borderland’ which is understood as a cultural space, often symbolic, encompassing different phenomena and situations of ethnic/cultural contacts and occurs not only in human communities but also in individuals. As a result the term becomes imprecise M3 - Text J2 - Ethnologia Polona 27 (2006) PY - 2006 EP - 39 KW - Border KW - borderland KW - Polish research KW - otherness A1 - Kabzińska, Iwona PB - Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology Polish Academy of Sciences VL - 27 CY - Warszawa SP - 21 T1 - The cultural border phenomenon UR - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/dlibra/publication/edition/61487 ER - TY - GEN N1 - 24 cm N2 - A crusade against ethnic stereotypes is one of the manifestations of the principle of political correctness now obligatory in Europe. They are considered to be the source of xenophobia and racism, and a hindrance to the construction of common Europe and the development of European post-national awareness. According to the author, lack of familiarity with ethnic stereotypes would seriously impede understanding many phenomena, for instance the nature of the relationships between various ethnic/national groups; this includes tensions in Polish/Russian relations. The article presents most crucial elements of the stereotypical image of Russians in the eyes of Poles and vice-versa. It also discusses initiatives to further the Polish/Russian dialogue (especially those undertaken by the Centre for Polish-Russian Dialogue and Understanding). Among others, those initiatives are meant to alter negative stereotypes which still divide Poles and Russians and hinder dialogue between the two nations. Dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church active in Poland and the Russian Orthodox Church is also supposed to contribute to changes in those stereotypes. The author considers the effects of actions undertaken by institutions whose aim is to further the Polish/Russian dialogue, their influence on the relations between Poland and Russia, and the possibility of changing negative stereotypes. She also describes various attitudes which anthropologists may assume with reference to the inter-ethnic dialogue L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/Content/54888/PDF/WA308_75366_P368_Poles-and-Russians_I.pdf M3 - Text J2 - Ethnologia Polona 33-34 (2012-2013) PY - 2012-2013 EP - 73 KW - Poland KW - Russia KW - dialogue KW - ethnic stereotypes A1 - Kabzińska, Iwona PB - Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology Polish Academy of Sciences VL - 33-34 CY - Warszwa SP - 53 T1 - Poles and Russians. In today’s world noise seems omnipresent, and is described as ‘the plague of our times’. Terms as ‘noise hell’, ‘noise dictatorship’ and ‘times of noise’ are used to describe the current state. It becomes evermore difficult to find silence. Many authors, a.o. these cited by the Author of this article: like Erling Kagge, Robert Sarah, Nicolas Diat and Siergiej J. Rumjancew speak of the quest to find silence, its meaning, influence on health and personal relationships, and dangers associated with life in a world dominated by ever-present, unsilenced noise. Moreover, this article presents findings of Polish (Wrocław) scholars regarding the phenomenon of silence, its understanding and experience. The Author presents data from preliminary research about silence and noise which she has conducted among the inhabitants of the Warsaw district of Mokotów (specifically its part called Garden-City Sadyba and the neighbouring block of flats Bernadyńska). The aim is to provide answers about the meaning of these phenomena for the inhabitants of this area, the influence on their everyday life, neighbour relations, attitudes towards their place of settlement. Another focus of research is to illustrate the changes in this soundscape, pointing to their sources and consequences. Part of the text is devoted to the ‘demise of silence’ in areas where large construction projects (like airport or hydroelectric power plant) are realised. As such it is difficult to determine how to reconcile the needs of a growing city with the demands of advocates of silence, how to resolve conflicts among people who love silence and these who find it dull and futile L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/Content/73418/PDF/WA308_94403_P326_O-ciszy-i-halasie_I.pdf M3 - Text J2 - On silence and noise. The hi-fi soundscape is characterized by natural sounds, recognizable as acoustic signals. Such a soundscape has room for quiet. The lo-fi soundscape is dominated by artificial, mechanical, aggressive, irritating sounds, or noise. The emergence of this type of soundscape has been facilitated by the development of industry, by urbanization, by the realization of succeeding investments in transportation, trade, and entertainment, and by the universality of various kinds of “loud” equipment in households and the public sphere N2 - As an example of passage from a hi-fi to a lo-fi soundscape, the author explains the causes for the degradation of the Czerniakowskie Lake nature reserve. The causes include, above all, the construction of succeeding housing settlements near the body of water, the nearness of busy communications arteries, and the pressure to increase the reserve’s use for entertainment and recreation. These activities not only have a disadvantageous impact on the natural environment, but they also contribute to the production of noise, which drives out the quiet N2 - The author notes the varying attitudes to changes to the reserve and various visions and expectations for its future. Whether the reserve will be changed entirely into a lo-fi soundscape will depend on the aims and plans that are implemented. Will the traits of a hi-fi soundscape become a phenomenon entirely of the past, of memories and reflections on the changes undergone by a place with which our fates are connected?
