The towns have grown in size, and their social profiles have changed. Colonial urban class structure has largely atrophied with the disappearance of rich landowner class and pauperisation of the “bourgeoisie”. As a result, while the better-off Jamaican citizens have gradually left their traditional, old fashioned residences in search for new living spaces, the abandoned districts and houses were gradually inhabited by the new population originating from the lower social strata. This led to the degradation of large urban areas; numerous old buildings, squares and whole parts of towns are often in a dramatic state of preservation – abandoned by the old landlords, misused by the new ones, and neglected by the authorities. The present paper explores the socio-cultural background of the contemporary spatial identity of the inhabitants of Kingston and their attitude towards the colonial architectural heritage. The data and reflection derive from ethnographic research conducted in Jamaica between January and July 2011 L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/Content/54828/PDF/WA308_75267_P714_Kingston-Kolonialne_I.pdf M3 - Text J2 - Journal of Urban Ethnology 11 (2013) PY - 2013 EP - 47 KW - colonial heritage KW - collective memory KW - identity construction KW - urban development KW - heritage appropriation A1 - Kaczmarek, Łukasz A1 - Parowicz, Izabella PB - Instytut Archeolgoii i Etnologii Polskiej Akademii Nauk VL - 11 CY - Warszawa SP - 35 T1 - Kingston: Kolonialne ślady w tożsamości przestrzennej UR - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/dlibra/publication/edition/54828 ER - TY - GEN A1 - Kobyliński, Zbigniew (1953– ) A2 - Kopacz, Jerzy. Their unparalleled heritage is the result of their cultural and spatial uniqueness. Following their fall into disrepair in the second half of the 20th century, a revitalization project was undertaken in the area under the blanket name of Docklands. In the 1980s, financial prosperity and the resulting boom in the construction industry enabled an accelerated transformation resulting in the gentrification of the district. Miesięcznice Smoleńskie), organised in Krakow, are a special case of politico-religious rituals, which commemorate the tragic event of the presidential plane crash on the 10th April 2010. While for external observers these gatherings appear to be primarily a kind of political demonstration, they mean something more for its participants. Compared to the Warsaw monthiversaries, the Krakow commemorations differ mainly in terms of the nature of the celebration, which is a consequence of the space of national heritage (the mausoleum of Polish kings and National Memorial Cross) and the type of participants. References to religion here are not just a regular, ritual scenography. On the contrary, by referring to the authority and power of the sacred, they are, in great measure, a source of inner strength for this ideological group supporting the governing revolutionary right-wing camp in Poland. This paper will analyse the role of religion in this ritual in order to uncover both the official and vernacular religious practices that create the phenomenon of the monthly Smolensk celebrations in Krakow L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/Content/66476/PDF/WA308_86579_P366_In-the-Shadow_I.pdf M3 - Text J2 - Ethnologia Polona 38 2017 (2018) PY - 2018 EP - 123 KW - politics KW - religion KW - nationalism KW - ritual KW - heritage KW - Miesięcznica Smoleńska KW - Poland A1 - Golonka-Czajkowska, Monika A2 - Kunz, Magdalena. On the basis of these results we present and analyze the social expectations towards archaeology as well as the kind of challenges presented to archaeologists by local communities. The author focuses mostly on the dominant place Roman Catholicism occupies in the Polish memory complex and in Roman-Catholic-related national identity projects, since these also affect the process of construing national heritage. Applying Pasieka’s notion of hierarchical religious pluralism, the author examines the construction of religious heritage according to the objectives of the contemporary conservative state historical policy. Assuming that Roman Catholicism constitutes the default element in the national heritage in Poland, the author examines how an alternative vision of religious heritage is created and what role minority religions play in the heritage-making processes in Poland. The exact location of the town was forgotten until its discovery through aerial prospection in 2006. In just 40 years the town grew into an important economic entity, competing for trade on the Vistula river until its relocation (1460–1462) during the Thirteen Years' War. The site is unique in that it has not been overbuilt by later structures as is common with medieval foundations. It is located in a flood plain approximately 2 km from the urban center of Toruń. Regular non-invasive surveys have revealed the spatial organization of the town in its untouched state from 550 years ago. The Łódź branch of the Scientific Society of Polish Archaeologists carried out three consecutive projects of non-invasive prospection in 2012–2014, using a Bartington Grad 601-2 instrument (0.5 m x 0.25 m sampling) to cover an area of almost 40 ha stretching for more than 1.6 km. The magnetic survey revealed anomalies located on the spot of observed crop marks, and extending far beyond the area open to aerial observation. Supplied with the “heritage” brand by appropriate institutions certifying objects and cultural practices, heritage serves as a canvas for the creation of attractive images of the past in specific places and communities. Thanks to its persuasive power, it can successfully model the collective imagination and influence identity processes. Guarded by procedures and verifying institutions, the special symbolic and economic value of heritage becomes an element of rivalry and a source of social conflicts. An illustration of such tension is Kraków’s palimpsestic and semantically dense space, which is ordered according to a strict symbolic hierarchy. Consideration of the different treatment of Kraków’s Old Town complex, which was entered on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1978, and the socialist realist centre of Nowa Huta, which unsuccessfully pretended to the title, reveals the hidden rules governing the supposedly democratic heritage policy L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/Content/113636/PDF/WA308_142039_P325_Between-ennoblement_I.pdf M3 - Text J2 - Etnografia Polska 63 z. 1-2 (2019) PY - 2019 IS - 1-2 EP - 154 KW - heritage KW - anthropology KW - policy KW - Nowa Huta KW - socialism KW - post-socialist transformation Poland A1 - Golonka-Czajkowska, Monika A2 - Granas, Michelle.
