Barter in the fur trade caused huge quantities of glass beads to be concentrated in settlements of the region. Different bead types were present in three chronological periods: 10th–beginning of 11th c., 11th, 12th–13th centuries. Comparison of certain bead types traces the routes by which glass beads came to the north of Rus’. Another method calls for comparing bead necklaces from burials. Cemeteries of the 11th c. in Belozer’e have helped to clarify some of the issues. A characteristic of trade routes in the 12th–13th centuries is limited due to a decline in the number of beads from archaeological sites. The Author presents the significance and perspectives of sourceoriented research on medieval glassware from the middle Volga region. The specific character of the region, its key importance in many ethno-cultural, political and historical processes, together with its massive source base of glass artifacts (which includes adornments, glass tableware, window glass) opens a broad perspective for historical reconstructions. Not only can the direction and dynamics of international relations be defined, but it is also possible to establish levels of craft and urban culture development, as well as more specific site chronologies, all of which help in stratifying the towns of Volga Bulgaria by their social status within the state. The main focus of this study is the Poznań research centre. The millennium project was an answer to the 1000th anniversary of the Polish State and the Baptism of Mieszko I, the first historical ruler of Poland, celebrated between 1965 and 1966. The research paradigms of the then archaeology were noticeably determined by research issues explored by the historiography of the Middle Ages. First independent archaeological studies on the early Piast state (regnum) were conducted only in the late twentieth century. Their results were based on archaeological evidence from the so-called millennium research in Wielkopolska. During carefully planned and methodically conducted excavations conducted by archaeologists from the Poznań centre, archaeological sources were impeccably recovered, documented and very well preserved along with the field data and documentation. A questionnaire survey of environmental archaeologists has been conducted to identify those barriers and gather information about general familiarity with GIS. The results suggest that the problem lies especially in the lack of funding, insufficient practical skills and inadequate data sources. A solution is proposed in the form of a Web-GIS framework that should mitigate some of the barriers, and facilitate interdisciplinary research.
